When it comes to face makeup, most of us will go to astonishing lengths in order to find that perfect product. That one foundation, powder or concealer that completely hides spots, minimizes lines and creates an overall flawless finish. We will spend a ton of coins — maybe not on one product, but on the hundreds we’ve tested in a lifetime — read reviews until we’re giddy and, of course, allow makeup artist after makeup artist to persuade us that their product is the best.
Setting Powder is used to set a foundation and prolong its wear. Apply it after foundation and concealer, and before applying powder-based colour. An added benefit: it helps powder blush or bronzer go on more evenly.
Sometimes what works well for others is just awful for you. I have compiled a list the best 11setting powders that have rave reviews from a countless amount of beauty lovers. So let’s jump right into this list.
1. Laura Mercier Translucent Loose Setting Powder $48 CAD
This translucent loose powder is truly “translucent”. It does not add any colour to my face. The powder is very finely milled and does not settle into lines. I have dry skin and this powder looks great on my face, does not make it even more dryer! It sets foundation well and provides a soft-focus finish that looks great in photos and in-person.
2. Charlotte Tilbury Airbrush Flawless Finish Setting Powder $58 CAD
This setting powder is very finely milled and never looks cakey. It doesn’t accentuate fine lines, but instead sets your makeup perfectly and blurs what you need it to. It is a little on the expensive side but I find it is truly worth the cost.
3. HOURGLASS Veil Translucent Setting Powder $55 CAD
This powder is a holy grail for anyone battling oily skin. It keeps my skin matte all day long without making me look caked or cracked. It also helps to blur my forehead lines. It does it all! It works so well that the price tag does not bother me. Definitely a must-have for my makeup bag.
4. TOO FACED Peach Perfect Mattifying Setting Powder – Peaches and Cream Collection $42 CAD
Let me start off by saying that I am SO GLAD I bought this! This powder lasts such a long time. It smells peachy and great price for the number of ounces it contains. Win win win! This powder doesn’t appear oily throughout the day. It actually kept my skin matte after 10 hours of wear, One thing that can be improved is the packaging on the powder. It is hard to control how much powder comes out and it gets a little messy. Overall, very great powder.
5. BECCA Hydra-Mist Set & Refresh Powder $46 CAD
This item was blowing up on Insta so I decided to purchase it for myself. It’s so amazing! I didn’t have any flashback and it felt so comfortable on my skin to the point where I’ve forgotten that I was wearing it. First of all, this product is a little damp which caught me off guard because I was worried that my makeup to be ruined, but it came out perfectly. A must-try for sure.
6. IT Cosmetics Bye Bye Pores Pressed Poreless Finish Airbrush Pressed Powder $38 CAD
This powder truly sets your foundation and leaves a wonderful silky finish. I didn’t have any issues with caking or making fine lines around my eyes pop. This powder does a fantastic job. The only downfall is that it doesn’t have a whole lot of powder in the compact for the price point which is a little disappointing.
7. Cover FX Perfect Setting Powder $42 CAD
This is one of the best setting powders I’ve ever tried. It doesn’t leave dry patches on the skin and when baking under the eyes. It leaves your skin looking airbrushed. It’s so amazing and I highly recommend to anyone!
8. LA MER The Powder $120 CAD
This is the best powder for the under eyes that I’ve ever used. It has a nice brightening effect that is amazing and doesn’t make my skin look dry! This is an amazing product, I’ve been using mine every day for almost 6 weeks and I’m almost halfway through the container. The shade is somewhere between Chanel 20 and 30 in their loose powders, but very neutral and natural.
9. IT Cosmetics Bye Bye Pores Poreless Finish Airbrush Powder $32 CAD
I use this over various types of foundations and it’s great. It instantly reduced the appearance of pores/texture on my face. I use this early in the morning at 6 am and I don’t usually have to blot my skin until 3 pm or later. One downside of this setting powder that if you have any dry patches on your skin, it will accentuate those areas. A good exfoliation and moisturizer will be an easy fix if you experience this issue.
10. TOM FORD Translucent Finishing Powder $97 CAD
Luxury at its finest! This powder is like butter. It looks like your natural skin, only a better version. It looks great over any foundation, however, the Tom Ford Traceless stick foundation with this powder is
11. DIOR Diorskin Forever & Ever Control Invisible Loose Setting Powder $66
This powder is worth the price. It goes on so smoothly without adding any colour. Allowing you to easily add other products (contours, blush etc), after application. The special ‘membrane’ allows the perfect amount of product to come through – tap lightly with your brush to get more. This is especially great if you take your makeup on the road or on a plane – the powder stays under the membrane which prevents waste (especially since this powder isn’t cheap!).
